Anyone embarking on this walk must understand that it is a very tough climb, and that as this is an active volcano, so high risks are involved. This climb usually starts at midnight, and you climb for around six hours, through the night, to reach the spectacular views of the top by sunrise. It is an active volcano and can be climbed, although it is very demanding. South of Lake Natron lies Mount Ol Doinyo Lengai (2878 metres high). We didn’t mind getting a little wet, and so loved this walk and the swim at the bottom of falls. With the PH as high as 10.5, Lake Natron is one of two alkaline lakes in the area of East Africa the other is Lake Bahi and is probably the worlds most. ![]() Salt-loving organisms include some cyanobacteria, tiny bacteria that grow in. As water evaporates during the dry season, salinity levels increase to the point that salt-loving organisms begin to thrive. However, after a few hours you’ll reach a beautiful natural swimming pool surrounded by steep rock walls – showered by cascades of spring-water and overlooked by palm trees. This image of the southern half of Lake Natron shows the characteristic colors of lakes where very high evaporation occurs. There’s a bit of gentle scrambling involved, and you’ll also cross the river a few of times. Its beauty comes with a price, though: most creatures that drink from the lake will end up dead. This walk winds up through a shady gorge (very welcome in the heat) between steep cliffs. With its bright red and orange colors, Lake Natron is definitely one of Tanzania’s most spectacular sights. Whilst here, take the chance to walk up to the Engero Sero Waterfalls. This walk is best done in the very early morning or late afternoon out of the heat of the day. You can walk out across the baked mud to the shores of the great soda lake itself, in which algae and zooplankton thrive – which in turn attract the flamingos that line the lake’s shore. 120 kilometres through insanely beautiful national parks, full of potholes and holes, where the brake is used more than the accelerator.Activities in the Lake Natron area focus mainly on walks. From the nearest point in the inhabited world, a poorly maintained dirt road leads to the lake. This is because Lake Natron is super difficult to reach. You will hardly meet anyone, it is quiet and totally off the beaten track. With the red pigment of the salt, salt crusts are formed on the surface with a pink-red tint. At the base of a mountain in Tanzania’s Gregory Rift, Lake Natron burns bright red, surrounded by the calcified remains of animals that were unfortunate enough to fall into the salty water. Subsequently, these micro-organisms take a nice sunbath on the surface (because, yes, the water is low). But you don’t need to visit the lake in person to see its stunning, seasonal color. ![]() The lake is mostly inhospitable to life, except for a few species adapted to its warm, salty, and alkaline water. Lake Natron, one of the most serene lakes in all of Africa, is located in northern Tanzania and nestled in the East African Rift System.
